With a strong pipeline of work, our team is growing. We are on design panels for three major transmission utilities in Australia and New Zealand and have a significant backlog of protection systems work. This role is based in our Christchurch office however other Beca locations may be considered for the right applicant.

We undertake protection system studies and relay settings design for high voltage installations up to 500 kV; and we have a growing portfolio of projects supporting the integration of renewable generation assets into transmission and distribution networks.

In this role, the key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Produce protection settings and system studies for HV substation projects across New Zealand and Australia
  • Work in collaboration with engineering and project teams to deliver timely and accurate documentation and reports - including work with project managers, secondary and other Power System design engineers, the client, and installation contractors as required
  • Carrying out quality checks and procedures
  • Developing your own technical expertise to support the delivery of high-quality technical advice to our clients
  • Lead teams of engineers to undertake packages of work, including training and mentoring junior staff
  • Contribute to a team environment and strive for delivery excellence within the Power team

Te rongoā | About you

Your protection design engineering skills are based on solid fundamentals and have been proven through leading the delivery of robust and innovative engineering design solutions on projects. You will have some experience delivering high voltage protection settings and studies. You will be a problem-solving protection engineer with 4+ years’ experience delivering concept and detailed designs for generation, transmission, distribution, industrial and/or building services clients. You will be comfortable collaborating with and leveraging others’ technical knowledge, to deliver conceptual and detailed designs on projects of all sizes.

You will be motivated to learn and grow, learning from the best in the industry. You will enjoy working in dynamic and busy teams where you are known for your enthusiasm, energy, outcome focus and for your excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience of working in a team environment is necessary for this role, along with the ability to manage and support multiple tasks.

Preferably, you will have capability across a range of the following areas:

  • Develop protection scheme concept designs based on established principles and standards that achieve the required performance levels in relation to safety, reliability, dependability, and selectivity.
  • Create Relay & Instrument Diagrams to effectively describe protection system architecture.
  • Prepare relay settings calculations and configuration detailed design – applying client and industry standards that achieve the required performance outcomes.
  • Lead and mentor junior protection engineers to deliver complete protection design packages on-time and within budget.
  • Undertake local and regional wide area protection studies
  • Experience in undertaking short circuit and load flow studies using DigSilent Powerfactory or similar recognised power system simulation software
  • Have an understanding of New Zealand and/or Australian HV Power industry including regulations, policies, industry, and client design principles, procedures and standards
  • Understand the key technical aspects of projects, implementation, and integration of complex systems
  • Be organised, adaptable and able to think creatively
  • Have good interpersonal skills and manage stakeholder relationships
  • Be a strong communicator who can effectively explain complex issues to a range of stakeholders (internal and external)
  • Be results-oriented with good technical engineering experience in either generation, transmission, distribution, industrial or rail traction power and managing project delivery
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering, ideally with a BE(Electrical) or equivalent. A candidate who has, or is in the process of attaining chartership as a Professional Engineer will be an advantage
